15-year-old web designers company launches a Chicago based clothing company's all Flash E-Commerce website

June 2, 2003, London, Ontario, Canada - Keith Peiris, the 15-year-old President & CEO of Cyberteks Design in London, Ontario announced today that the first website of the Wepawear.com, a Chicago based Latin clothing company was launched today.

The significance of this website was the client wanted a Full Flash E-Commerce website. The client had a very distinct and specific design of what they wanted their website to be, and felt that the only way to achieve this was with Macromedia Flash. The challenge was that they wanted their e-commerce fully integrated within their Macromedia Flash site. After consulting with various web design studios from across North America about a full Macromedia Flash e-commerce site, Wepawear was told "it could not be done". The client contacted us and we were the only company to say, "We can do that".

Technology

Given our extensive knowledge of Macromedia Flash/server communication, implemented on several of our existing clients site (NHL Officials Association, Ontario Minor Hockey Association, London Knights Major Junior A Hockey Club) we were confident we could deploy the entire site with Macromedia Flash. It was then decided that latest version of Macromedia Flash MX would be the only way to get the job done quickly and efficiently. Using several of its new and enhanced features including on-the-fly JPEG Image loading, the Variable Loading and Sound objects, as well as the flexibility of the revised Components, we knew we could deliver a fully functional, dynamic website so what the user sees is entirely in Macromedia Flash MX - all the way from the homepage to the checkout. The entire site is fully secured for credit card transactions.

The payment gateway we used was PsiGate from Toronto, Canada. PSiGate provides Premier Secure Transaction Processing Services that is a world-class solution deployed on Sun Solaris, Oracle and Sun Enterprise Servers in a fully redundant, mission critical, clustered configuration. They are able to ensure maximum performance while taking into account power, security, disaster tolerance and bandwidth requirements.

The Site

The first thing a customer sees upon entering the site is the introductory animation. The client felt that the introduction was extremely important to their online identity. They wanted the music (composed by a professional musician exclusively for this site) and visuals to compliment each other in order to reflect the feel and style of Wepa. The greatest advantages of the Macromedia Flash player are that it renders the animation on the fly and is available on a wide range of platforms. The challenge this created was maintaining the video/audio synching which varied depending on the performance of the system it was running on. Using the Sound object and advanced Action Scripting, we were able to preserve the look and feel of the introduction on the widest range of platforms.

On the home page the customer is greeted with more colorful music utilizing the Sound object and audio control is available at the bottom of the screen. The contact page contains a Macromedia Flash e-mail form, from which any of Wepa's various departments can be contacted. All of the product information (names, sizes, colors, etc.) is loaded from the database. All of the product images are brought in on the fly using Macromedia Flash MX, eliminating the step of converting every product image into an SWF. Customers can add/remove items from their cart and view their cart at any time. On checkout the customer is taken to a full Macromedia Flash form. Even the printable receipt is displayed in Macromedia Flash and an e-mail receipt/confirmation is also sent to the customer.

Conclusion

Using the technology available in Macromedia Flash MX we were able to create a full Macromedia Flash e-commerce site, from introductory animation to checkout. Most importantly we were able to provide an online presence exactly the way the client had envisioned it.
