Press Release - May 1, 2001
13-YEAR-OLD PRESIDENT & CEO
OF CYBERTEKS DESIGN, APPOINTED TO THE ADVISORY BOARD OF SCHOOLNET
London, Ontario, Canada: May 1, 2001 - Cyberteks Design,
A Division of Cyberteks Systems Corporation announced today that its President
& CEO, 13 year old Keith Peiris, an internationally recognized and
award winning web designer was appointed to the Canada's Schoolnet Advisory
Board.
Nineteen young people from across the country are part of the SchoolNet
Youth Advisory Board. Membership comprises youths ages 10 to 18, including
representatives self-identified as aboriginal, visible minority and having
a disability. There is both rural and urban representation with participation
from each province and one territory. Keith Peiris is the only Londoner
appointed to the Board.
About Schoolnet Advisory Board
What?
The SchoolNet Youth Advisory Board (SYAB) will research and discuss such
topics as the future of information and communication technologies (ICT),
skills needed to succeed in the new knowledge society, tools required
to best develop these skills, accessibility to technology and online content,
content preferences and youth engagement through the use of ICT.
Why?
Canada's young people are now highly exposed to ICT. Internet access has
been made available to all public schools and libraries, thousands of
community centres and can be found in 30% of Canadian households (StatCan).
There is an 83% Internet penetration among Canadian youth (ACNeilson).
With this degree of exposure, it is critical that Canadian youth have
easy access to safe online learning communities.
So, Canada's SchoolNet is now looking to create more online resources
and services for Canadian youth. And we believe that to develop successful
new services, we need to consult Canadian youth on what their needs are
before we do anything else. The SYAB will provide Canadian youth with
the opportunity to guide these new online initiatives.
How?
In spring 2001, the SYAB will participate in online discussion forums
and workshops, lead by an education consultant, to help them frame the
issues and formulate recommendations. SYAB members, along with chaperones,
will then visit Ottawa for two days this spring. On Saturday May 12, 2001,
members will participate in a face-to-face workshop. Here they will get
a chance to get to know each other better, bring together their ideas
as a group and finalize their recommendations to SchoolNet.
On Sunday, May 13th, 2001, the SYAB will make a presentation of their
recommendations, in person and in a live web-cast, to SchoolNet, the SchoolNet
National Advisory Board (members are leaders of various educational associations,
provincial and territorial Ministries of Education, provincial learning
networks, the research community and the volunteer sector), participating
youth organizations, select SchoolNet partners and others in the community.
Senator Landon Pearson, Honourary Chair of the SYAB will also attend as
an honourary guest. This event will be held at the Canada Science and
Technology Museum on May 13, 2001, the final day of Canada's IT week.
